How to receive compensation after drought
Compensation may be granted if a house sustains serious subsidence damage and cracking as a result of prolonged drought affecting the subsoil.
According to the drought damage scheme, compensation may be granted if a house sustains serious subsidence damage and cracking as a result of prolonged drought affecting the subsoil. This means that building damage, such as some of the damage that occurred following the prolonged and severe drought in 2018, may henceforth be eligible for compensation through insurance companies.
It is the Danish Natural Hazards Council that will determine whether a drought has occurred. This determination will be based on an independent assessment of the conditions at the site of the damage, conducted by specially appointed evaluation experts. The investigation is initiated by the insurance company that has received a claim for drought damage via Naturskadebasen (the Storm Database).
The drought damage scheme only covers damage that is not already covered by a standard insurance policy – regardless of whether such a policy has been taken out for the property or not. Minor damage, such as insignificant cracks, will not be eligible for compensation under this scheme.
